Can I assume that any new toilet will fit the existing installation ie the distance between the floor pipe and the wall?

Nope. You must measure from the toilet bolt or cap to the wall. Hopefully, you're normal and it turns out to be the most common distance of 12-inches or a little more. If not, then 10 and 14-inches are still readily available. Anything outside of those, means you should keep and re-build the old toilet or have a Plumber move the toilet's drain pipe.
