Yesterday I saw a Subaru and in the middle of the left side of the rear bumper, poking through an intetional hole was the outline of an arrowhead, suitable almost for attaching a hook, but it wasn't in the middle of the bumper. What was it?
I've seen actual hooks, but this was almost equivalent to a ring, but pointed, not round.
fwiw, the similar attachment on my Beloved Honda Insight is also offset, and about 1/4 of the way in from the side.
I seem to recall, from the time I worked for a car dealer parts dept, new cars would come in with an attaching point for tie-downs during shipment. I believe they were usually removed before delivery to a customer.
Most likely a point to attach a towing cable. I have a Toyota that has a cover over a hole in the front bumper and a bolt with a hole in it to attach a cable to it for towing in the trunk. You remove the bolt and screw it into that hole.
My 2007 Toyota came with the mother of all eye-bolts in the trunk. The
2018 doesn't have one. I don't know if it was a cost-cutting measure or if they weren't that useful.

I forgot to mention that it was colorful. The auto equivalent of jewelry, I guess. Might have had big ruby-red dots to match his dark red car.

My 2000 and 2005 Toyotas had/have nothing, no bolts and no holes in the bumper, and my 2000 did have to get towed once with the previous car. I think I watched and I know he did it. I'll have to be real careful in the future.
I guess one can use a horizontal V-shaped hole to attach a tow cable as well as a round hole, but I think he mostly wanted to doll up his car. I did the same thing when I was younger, like the green and clear lucite handle** to my column-mounted automactic gear-shift lever on my 1950 Olds, though I don't think anyone ever commented on it.
