Very few solar panels on new houses (2025 Update)

I'm not convinced that they are without any subsidys. The problem is that most of the power isnt generated when most use most of it and even when it is like with AC in summer, it costs a lot to have solar that powerful even if the location is good for solar.

Wow, it sure is cheap to the customer there. Do you know if the govt is putting a subsidy into that? Here in the USA, AFAIK, the cost would be at least 4 times that. There is a federal tax credit of 30%, so assuming you pay taxes, you'd reduce it by ~ $6K, but still it would cost about 3 times your cost. Just all the labor is substantial.

Maybe it depends what country they're made in? Those are big heavy fragile things to ship internationally.

Sure, I believe that. Wiring in a grid tied inverter, doing the rest o the wiring to code..... I'd venture that only a small percentage of those who can do an oil change could do it right and that's after spending a lot of time researching how to do it right. We see pics here all the time of DIY wiring, where people can't even install a light fixture correctly.

Maybe where you are a licensed electrician is required, but even here in the People;s Republic of NJ, you can do legally do electrical work yourself on your own home. But very few solar installs are done by homeowners.

There's a _big_ difference to the Local Authorities Hving Jurisdiction between signing off on you installing a 240V line to the welder in your garage as opposed to you setting up a backfeed to the electrical utility.

You must have some really thick people. FFS the damn things come with instructions! All you do is connect the wires where the manual says to, you don't even need to understand how it works.

Why? Both have wiring that the AHJ can look at and see if it's done to code. It's basically wiring panels, an inverter module, disconnects. The DIY guy isn't designing any backfeeding circuitry, just hooking up wires. The shutdown when grid power is lost is within the inverter, AFAIK. And the system producing power correctly and not screwing the grid again is determined by the inverter, not the installer. Note, I'm not saying it's trivial. In fact I said that only a small percentage of solar arrays are probably DIY. But I don't see it being more dangerous or requiring more skill than someone putting in a panel or sub-panel either.

Trying to prevent your people buying stuff from another country kinda makes sense. Although I'd prefer there to be no import duties anywhere. Borders are fictitious lines. Let anyone buy anything from anywhere.

Good point. They also have micro ones, where each panel has it' own inverter and those just tie onto branch circuits that feed the panel. So, if it's going to backfeed, then it's on the inverter, not the installer. I don't think those caught on much either, not sure what the big idea is, except that it's scalable, you can add more, and something to do with a little more efficient, because on a system with one inverter, if one panel has less sun, it limits what the other's can produce.

Right, but if you don't have enough capital gains, then you can only deduct $3K a year from other income, eg wages. You can carry the rest forward to future years, so if you have no more capital gains, you can reduce your income by $3K a year. That sorry number hasn't been updated in decades.
