Snowblower will not shut off with the key switch, must disconnect spark plug to get it to shut off.

Murray 4.5 hp snowblower will start and run without the key. Key switch will not shut off the engine. Even pulling the kill wire off the coil will not stop engine. Must pull off spark plug to get engine to stop. Is this a switch problem or coil issue.?

Do you have the model number? I presume this is rope start. Possibly this unit is one that requires completing a circuit to stop the engine. Short something to ground type of thing.

It's a switch problem. (How many wires go to the coil? Why do you call one a kill wire?) If you want to be detailed, find a wire going to the switch and disconnect it, then attach wires between the switch and the wire you just disconnected and put a switch between the two wires. Then you'll have a key switch that doesn't need a key, and yhou can see how it would work if the key switch were not always electrically closed.

Or just disconnect the key switch and see if it doesn't stop.

The key "un-grounds" the Magneto "P" lead to let it run. When you remove the key contacts are SUPPOSED to close to ground it out. Either the connections in the "keyswitch" are corroded/damaged or the wire is disconnected

Disconnecting the wire will GUARANTEE it stays running. The "run" wire is actually a "kill" wire that needs to ground to kill the engine
