Shower faucett valve question ??

Upstairs shower, single handle faucett. Pull straight out for water, turn left for hot, right for cold.

Water not leaking, but can hear a hiss all the time. Sounds like some faucetts do when you turn them on just slightly. Actually, sounds almost like water is running (very slightly), but none running, and no leak.

Is valve stem bad, and just sucking air or something ?

Thanks !!

If it is doing it when running it is probaly something to do with the valve porting , if not running check the piping as you may have a pin hole leak in the Piping behind the wall .

Sound will travel a long way thru pipes (remember that TV show with Vincent "Beauty and the Beast" where they tapped on the pipes to signal others in the underground?

Check for a running toilet or outside spigot where there may be a slow leak that is only sounding like it is coming from the shower.

This faucet may have two seals, and water may be leaking between the hot and cold feeds. Replace the cartridge.

You can replace the O-rings in your cartridge or just replace the cartridge in a kit

First make sure there isnt pressure in the Diverter Tube that feeds your shower head.

Release that pressure by pulling up the diverter popup and see if you still hear the noise once the water has drained.

Bad news it could be a leak in the wall there are a number of solder joints that could leak so check under your shower if you are on a first floor for a leak.

Drywall ceilings can hold a lot of water for a while if it is a tiny leak and it could run to a remote location accross ceilings through studwalls so finding the resulting water can be difficult.
