Just like with all new vaccines, monitoring will continue after it's deployed. They are also continuing to monitor the seventy thousand that have already received the two vaccines as part of the testing, which will be key to determining how long protection lasts.

There is actually an issue about whether people who volunteered to test the vaccines that received the placebo should immediately get the vaccine, since they volunteered. Unfortunately, that would interfere with the study results of long term results. So, should they get the vaccine now or not?

IDK, I'll leave that for the experts to weigh the pros and cons. It's similar to what happens with some drugs, eg a new cancer drug. When it shown that it works, that it has significantly prolonged the lives of patients that were given it, they have then decided it would be unethical to continue the placebo group and make it available to them too. Actually, I wonder if there is anything that prohibits them from just getting the vaccine when it's available anyway? Did they have to agree not to get vaccinated for a year, sign something? Even if they did, I don't see any practical way for the drug companies to enforce it. They just show up at CVC and get it like anyone else, when it's their turn. Seems like mostly a non-issue to me.

I did read that those getting the placebo would be getting the real deal once approved.

you received the placebo, you may be offered the study vaccine at no cost if and when the study vaccine has been shown to be safe and that it works, but it is possible that this may not occur until 2 years after vaccination,? the J&J document reads. ?This will be determined after consultation with the national health authorities in your country.?
