When you are unable to attack the message, attack the messenger.
You are still left with the fact that California has some of the strictest mask mandates and most severe lockdowns and they are dropping like flies. Nobody has actually quantified how much masks "stop the spread", particularly in the sloppy manner most mask wearers use them and the conspicuous lack of standards about what constitutes a mask.
