Actually, I only lived in an apartment for 2 years out of a total of 30 years active duty service. All the rest of the time, it was in a single family detached home I owned. (I only had 2 military moves in my entire career thanks to being able to get many different assignments at those 3 geographic locations and extended 2-5 years at most of the assignments I did have. It was a very atypical career that I found totally to my liking.) Much of the work was classified so I can't provide details.

Lucky you. Enlisted for me, DP (turned into IT). Mostly I had to move every 3 years, Only Norfolk and Sasebo JP had 2 back to back tours in same place (out of 26 years). Most were Most to coast moves.

Thank you for YOUR service! As a DP (data processing) and IT (information technology) specialist, what you did is almost certainly more critical to the overall mission than much of what I did. I was MC (medical corps), but almost all my assignments were non-clinical. I joined the Navy to pursue a non-clinical career path and was lucky to be allowed to do that. Primary duties were interesting but my most memorable and gratifying time was spent on collateral duties and consultation work both for other DoD departments but mostly for non-DoD agencies and departments.

Notice the references to "means of production' and 'capital accumulation" which comes first in the list of characteristics, and that neither of these are mentioned in your definition, even though they are essential.

I think I know that better than you do. I phrased the end of my reply as I did with references to "my book" in order to gracefully end the discussion between retired and me.

Well, duh. No one said they spend no money to increase profits. You found one example of investing to increase profits. Big deal, there are hundreds of thousands of examples.

Absolutely NOT! First of all, no "post career" except becoming a professional retired old fart. If I wanted a "post career" I would never have chosen administration. Not my talent. I thrive on paperwork, not people. Besides, I never wanted any assignment where I would have to take the blame for the misdeeds and error of others. I refused to take credit for any of the good things my subordinates did; insisting that they get full credit. In exchange, I told them that I would never cover for them. Not at all consistent with military tradition but I didn't care. I never wanted a career to begin with. I would have retired in my early 20s if I had the means.

Excellent! Congratulations. That's what impressed my about the military. Saw many enlisted people go far because of the opportunities that they never would have had in civilian life. Besides, I learned early on that the most essential people in uniform were the enlisted corps. Especially true on board vessels. I learned much more from the enlisted people I worked with over the decades than I could ever teach to them.
