Quietest whole house generator?

Hi All,

I does not look like I will be able to find a fuel cell whole house backup generator for about five more years, so I am thinking of going piston.

Anyone have a recommendation for a natural gas whole house generator that is very quiet and has the least amount of vibration?

Many thanks,

-T

From Consumer Reports:

Champion 100179 $3700. Rating 93 Natural Gas Rating 11,000 watts

Cummins RS13A $3400. Rating 91. Natural Gas Rating. 13,000 watts

Kohler 14RCAL $4250. Rating 90. Natural Gas Rating 12,000 watts

Generac 7224 $4700. Rating 89. Natural Gas Rating. 14,000 watts.

CR just happened to have them rated this month. I can look up the smaller ones if you want.

Thank you!

They forgot the sound levels, unless the rating is the db's.

And I am suspicious as Generac has a really bad reputation around these parts for bad reliability and not working when you need it.

The sound levels are all 3/5. I didn't see decibels anywhere.

The Kohler Power link has spec sheets that provide noise level :

Generator Set Sound Data Model 14RESA 8 point logarithmic average sound levels are

63 dB(A) during weekly engine exercise and 67 dB(A) during full-speed generator diagnostics and normal operation. For comparison to competitor ratings, the lowest sound levels are 58 dB(A) and 63 dB(A) respectively.* All sound levels are measured at 7 meters with no load.
  • Lowest of 8 points measured around the generator. Sound levels at other points around generator may vary depending on installation parameters.

The most common ones in my area are Generac - on propane - and you can hardly hear them from the street - unlike the portable generators, like mine .. screamers .. John T.

They are actually running? Just 5-minute tests or power failures?

You can't hear them at all when they aren't running .. :-) John T.

That's good.

That reminds me of OT messages saying "test - ignore". It'd be REALLY easy to ignore that if it wasn't posted.
