Since there are twelve bumps, a press and it's sitting on top of a box marked "eggs", I'd guess that it's a press to form egg cartons or egg holding partions of some kind out of cardboard. The resulting shaped cardboard could hold the eggs inside that wood box.

There is either another stage in the process or some strange shaped eggs. All the ones I've seen are a more rounded shape for the egg.
This is not a mold - it is an "autofolder" - The better ones had a double acting apparatus that spread the "cones" on the tool apart.
OK, that makes sense. I'm familiar with the tooling for the foam and pulp cartons used these days but folded would be a predecessor to them.

I don't remember that style but could have been when I was a kid. Molded pulp was the norm. I also found it interesting in Italy we could even by a 2 pack of eggs.
I see a variety of egg cartons, but I still don't see something that looks like it was made in the device. I first pointed out that is what it is, just saying I don't see anything that looks like it actually came out of that stamper.
Just some samples of the fold-flap style cartons and another similar device. The device at the auction might be a 2-step process <?>
but the fancier devices seem to have extra mechanical features that might make it a 1-step process. John T.
Why spoof me?
You're all wrong. It's an ice-cube tray for people who don't use ice.
Not exactly like those, but I remember some cardboard egg cartons. As per other post, they could also be used as ice cub trays.
When I lived near Pratt Institute in Brooklyn most first year students had to design an egg carton and throw it out of iirc a 2nd story window without breaking the eggs inside. At least they had to try.
I suppose they had a rule against a big wad of bubble wrap in a box.
