Yep,, been doing that for decades now.
It isnt really, just not as easy because you cant see the back.
I don't use those at all, just mow it back to a stubble. That's easier because you can feel how long it is at the back because you can easily feel the bit you have missed.
I don't even use the combs at all anymore, just do it without them.
Like a buzz cut. It grows out quite quickly and imo looks better than the bare skull effect which needs daily maintenance. F*ck that. Same with the face..

+1 Scissors over comb here. It's hard to master. Don't want to look like a Nazi skinhead or an ex-con, I have a bad reputation to uphold. I suppose I could let it grow, but people would mistake me for Jeesus. []'s
I start with a No 5 all over, then I switch to a No 2 for the sides and back. Lastly, I remove the guard and touch up the base of the neck. I use two mirrors for that part.
Google says that the number 5 is only 5/8 th inch. That means it is almost a buzz cut. OK if that is what you want, I guess.
I decided, with encouragement from my wife (who doesn't want to be blamed if she makes me look as if I fell into a lawnmower), to just let it grow. I'm retired, I'm going out only to take walks in the neighborhood or to shop for food, I'm in my 70s, I really don't care how I look or what other people might think about how I look. Besides I'm amused about watching what my full head of very wavy hair chooses to do. Each day it's a new look. Took a real attitude adjustment for this veteran of 30 yrs. on active duty! Never too old to try something new; especially if it's harmless.
Now you have choicES. Before you told me to use a 2 all over and I can't go wrong.
