What is your gmail configuration? What port is T-Bird using? I doubt you made it this far using 25 instead of 587 but check it.

I haven't seen any recent announcement that gmail is enforcing TLS1.2 but you can check that as well. What OS are you using? If Windows, what .NET Framework version?

Gee, my outgoing setup from TB to Gmail is: smtp.gmail.com to port 465 (which is indicated to be the default port for this service)

I've got no problem with outgoing e-mail from TB ver. 60.5.1 on Win 10 Home 64 bit, ver 1809.

Yeah, I forgot gmail is different. Many servers went to 587 for TLS instead of the old default of 25.

It all starts off the same. The client send EHLO and the server responds with its capabilities. If one of them is STARTTLS the client initiates a secure session and reconnects.

I'm assuming the OP's client was configured correctly since he said it stopped working.

Other Windows email programs that I know work with Gmail include Pegasus and Claws Mail. I used Pegasus for many years and it's perfectly stable (if quirky,) but now I prefer Thunderbird.
