OT. Computer Purchase Advice

I have both free Open Office and Libre Office on Windows pc and laptop but ran into a situation where a document created on either would not render properly on Windows Word and had to buy Windows Office. Ironically Open Office and Libre Office will open very old Windows documents that Windows no longer supports nor will open.

I tried a couple of those, when iirc looking for a way to type into the phone without using the phone.

The one that came up first I could never get to work. I forget its name. I deduced, perhaps incorrectly, that I needed something called adb----, and I dl'd a file from somewhere I had not heard of, and unzipped it, and before I knew it I had a virus. it kept bring up screens I did not want in the browser. Now I recall that was when I first got Vista, and I had disabled UAC. Now I don't do that.

It's not the fault of the phone, etc. that I got the virus, and I was able to track it down and squash it.

After looking it up I see that what I meant was the Windows "Your Phone" app. What I mentioned is apparently an added new feature (beta?) to an old app and only available for certain phones.

Well this page calls Your Phone Companion a legacy app that has been replaced by Your Phone, but the Android app store only has Your Phone Companion, not Your Phone (which I guess is for iphones.)

Your Phone Companion looks pretty good. I'm going to install it, even though my next phone is not on the list, with a link at

. I hope I don't like it so much I won't be able to change phones. Reviews since Dec. 1 up until Dec. 11 have been pretty bad. This is Companion, not what you wrote about.

Another problem, Again, like with MyPhoneExplorer, when an app needs a program on the PC, it's hard to find what it is or where to get it.

Phone's in the other room. I'll let you know if I get it working.

LibreOffice was a fork of Open Office about 10 years ago. Open Office wasn't getting much love for bug fixes or enhancements. It's still lagging badly.

There's a new version as of November.

You need the Windows 'Your Phone' app on your PC *and* the Android 'Your Phone Companion' app on your phone. They talk to each other. I just installed them and the connection seems to be working fine. The Android apps installed on my phone now also run fine using the PC screen. BUT they run in a small vertical phone like window that can't be expanded. So IMO my full screen BlueStacks Android emulator is far superior at running Android apps on a PC. YMMV.

External usb drives are available for about $35 - Canadian.

Yup. The SSD is "motherboard mounted" and the HDD fits in the storage bay

I've had hard drives in laptops for decades and have not had one fail. I've had customer units fail - but the rest of the machine was badly enough beet up it was no wonder - - -. I've also had customer units that have been tossed arounf as if they were a hammer - and the hard drive surviced while the hinges, screen, and keyboard all died - in some cases numerous times.

Lots of newer desktops have wifi built in

ANd external usb hard drives are cheap (for "archiving") Keep what you need at the time on the laptop drive - the rest on the shelf.Use something like a "mybook live" personal "cloud" and you don't even need the usb cable.

Dead simple on word 2016 - just use the blank document single space option - - -

On Office 2010: Set single space as the default

Go to Design > Paragraph Spacing > Custom Paragraph Spacing. Under Line Spacing, choose Single. At the bottom, select New documents based on this template. Select OK.

Same thing on 2007

2016 makes it so simple even a 65 year old can do it.

Worse than MS in it's latest incarnation.

They manage to crank out a maintenance release once a year, which are bug fixes of the 4.1.0 major release in 2014.

I have little use other than when I receive documents or spreadsheets that I have to review. My attempts to edit are usually disasters. Personally, if it can't be done with gVim it isn't worth doing.

I ended up buying this thing. It's supposed to show up on Sunday.

I almost bought an Asus similar to this. It had a little mechanical blind over the camera to close if she was using Nook and wanted to hide. An old sock will work just as well. Maybe I can get a job with the Pentagon. The cost overrun was only

25%.

Looks real good. My only comment is that I do not believe a touch screen is necessary with a lap top. I tried one when they came out and found it much more convenient to use the keyboard and mouse.

I think the next model or two up .. I7 etc was well over 2 grand.

I forgot about Touch-Screen when you first asked for ideas .. not my priority - but probably a must-have for a lot of people, now-a-days. John T.

Not a necessity but every once in a while I use it. Good if you want to make up a photo.

That is almost identical to mine but has a larger drive. I like it a lot.

I bought my LT for its portability. I would hate to have to drag a mouse around with me, though I sometimes do use a trackball when sitting in my easy chair. My LT also has a touchpad of course but IMHO a touchscreen is so much easier to use for certain screen moves and for use in certain locations (like sitting on the can). But of course it's completely a subjective thing and YMMV. On the bright side you don't have to clean a touchscreenless LT screen nearly as often.

Looks good to me. Good choice.

When you have it folded backwards, the keyboard is on the back so it's nice that it's a touch screen. It's almost like having a tablet. You can binge Youtube and Netflix etc without the keyboard getting in the way.
