According to one story, mini golf dates back to 1867, starting in St. Andrews, Scotland. An 18-hole course was created just for female golfers. However, there was a catch.
As "proper" ladies, the women were only allowed to putt as it was considered unladylike for them to swing their clubs higher than their shoulders.
Very intersting. I had thought the Lilluputians created it.

I remember once hearing golf described as "putting small ball in a hole, using tools totally unsuited to that purpose".
A friend and I have the honor of being ejected and banned at a miniature golf course. In later years I developed a variant of gold involving a .357 revolver. It's sort of rough on the balls. Luckily there is a public walking trail around a local golf course with a good supply of balls hidden in the bushes. I think they call that 'the rough'.
Dad always called it "cow pasture pool" .
