Are you saying that 11,000 crimes were committed with guns by legal gun
owners in the United States? If that's what you're saying, please show your
source of information. If your source doesn't end with .gov, it's probably
Even if it does end in .gov you have to look closely as some of the data
is improperly commingled. Often there are legal defensive shootings by
legal gun owners in among their stats. A good part of the problem is
inconsistent reporting from the various states.
I just read in today's Washington Post that more people in the U.S. have
been killed by guns in homicides, suicides, and gun accidents than have
been killed in all wars starting with the Revolutionary War.
Unfortunately, that number was not broken down by legally owned guns
versus illegally owned guns. However, the number is sobering, or should be.
Yes, we would much rather be gunless, gutless perfect baby-killing Brits:
James Patrick Bulger (16 March 1990 - 12 February 1993) was a two-year-old
boy from Kirkby, Merseyside, England, who was abducted, tortured and
murdered by two 10-year-old boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and
Jon Venables (born 13 August 1982). Bulger disappeared on 12 February 1993
from the New Strand Shopping Centre, Bootle, while accompanying his mother.
His mutilated body was found on a railway line in nearby Walton on 14
And those two murdering 10 year olds didn't even have a gun.
Here are some more gun massacres committed by your fellow, peace-loving
The Hungerford massacre occurred in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, on 19
August 1987. The gunman, 27-year-old Michael Robert Ryan, armed with two
semi-automatic rifles and a handgun, shot and killed sixteen people
including his mother, and wounded fifteen others, then fatally shot himself.
On 13 March 1996, unemployed former shopkeeper and former Scout leader
Thomas Watt Hamilton (born Thomas Watt, Jr. 10 May 1952) walked into the
Dunblane Primary School armed with two 9 mm Browning HP pistols and two
Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolvers, all legally held. He was carrying 743
cartridges, and fired his weapons 109 times.
The Cumbria shootings were a killing spree that occurred on 2 June 2010 when
a lone gunman, Derrick Bird, killed 12 people and injured 11 others before
killing himself in the county of Cumbria, North West England, United
Yes, the peace-loving, gun-hating Brits somehow still manage to massacre
people with guns they supposedly don't have. Just like psychos everywhere
else in the world. Didn't the Brits virtually invent serial killing with
Jack the Ripper? Don't you EVER get tired of running down America when it's
clear you Brits are not one iota better?
And when you can't get guns, you build bombs to mass murder:
David John Copeland (born May 15, 1976) is a former member of the British
National Party and the National Socialist Movement, who became known as the
"London Nail Bomber" after a 13-day bombing campaign in April 1999 aimed at
London's black, Bangladeshi and gay communities. The bombs killed three
people, including a pregnant woman, and injured 129, four of whom lost
limbs. No warnings were given.
Displaying a firearm and not using it can be considered as "brandishing a
firearm" in many states.
Scenario: Bad guys want to rob you. You "display" firearm and they
retreat. They go to police officer and state that you waved a gun at them.
One lies and the other swears to it. You get arrested and lose your permit.
You never pull a gun unless you shoot it.
Oh, please. I can just see it now. The robber that broke into your
the middle of the night, or the guy with a knife in a liquor store, is
call the police and file a complaint because he was confronted with a
Yeah, I'm sure that happens all the time.... How do you dream up
Most of these bad guys that wind up confronted by a lawful gun
owner already have rap sheets 3 pages long and do everything they can
to avoid contact with the police.
I say you're wrong. Displaying a firearm and NOT shooting it is meritorious
and worthy of praise. You've prevented a disaster and no one died.
You are correct that the object of my affections may take it the wrong way
and get all pissy, and I'd certainly take his attitude into account before
escalating the conflict to a potential shoot-out.
On the two occasions I've had to display my sidearm, the actors would have
to bathe, put down their tire-iron, and wipe the drool from their chins
before making a complaint.
In my state, you can't lose your permit simply because you were arrested.
Keywords: "In my state". One size does not fit all, and the scenario I
described was explained to me during my third CCF class by an Internal
Affairs Bureau panel member with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police
Department who investigates OIS's. (Officer Involved Shootings) He
explained that if one perp lies, and another swears to it, you would lose
the gun and permit until you could make a judge agree with your side of said
scenario. He said he had seen it happen.
Bottom line, yes, you can defuse some situations by showing a weapon, or
even intimating one with your hand. But, you also must admit that there
have been situations where doing that has gotten innocent people in trouble.
I monitor Southern Nevada Law Enforcement channels when in Las Vegas, and
have for years. You'd be surprised the number of people who call in others
for making a gun gesture with their hands. Now, the police do not really
look for that individual, but have it on record, and if that person is
stopped, it pops out, and then they usually spend some time getting
As always, the laws hinder "normal" people.
