A friend came over with a late-model BMW and we went to a concert andwhen we got back, her remote wouldn't open the door. She tried over andover as she panicked and thought she'd not be able to start the car.I couldn't tell if the remote's battery was dead, or the car's. I toldher I would jump the car, but she said, No, it won't work. Then we discussed if I had a replacement battery for the remote. I have2032's but nothing bigger, and she says her remote uses a bigger one. Isaid, Isn't there a key in your remote, and she said "uh" and brushed itoff. I said, Why is there a keyhole if there is no key? So she finally took the key out of the remote and opened the door but asshe did that she said the car wouldn't start because the battery isdead. But of course it did. She admitted that she panicked. What do you call the arrangement between the car and the key or theremote where the car can tell if the key/remote is nearby, even thoughthe key/remote has no battery or a dead battery???? Is there atechnical name? A poplular name? I have the same thing in my 2005 Solara, that there is a chip in thekey, but no battery, and the key has to be within a few inches of thekeyhole. She has no keyhole (other than in the door), but the remotehas to be near the driver's side of the dashboard. In my case, I can make a copy of my key on a non-chip-key blank, anduses it with a broken chip key, if for example, I have the handle of keyon the same keyring. The first key turns inside the keyhole and thehandle makes the car happy.

Strictly urban. Certainly not meant for North American roads & highways - with its 600 - 700 cc engine. And imagine meeting the head-wind from a big old flat-nosed semi speeding along a 55 mph 2-lane .. " Where did that little van disappear to ? " John T.

I'm familiar with dealing with those bow waves on a bike. The real problem is the effect varies on wind conditions so you're never sure.
