We don't have any of those. Maybe coyotes. Mainly crows and turkey vultures. All summer I observed a dead deer by the side of the freeway interchange decompose nearly un-scavenged.
In any event, I'm talking about suburbia and cities. We're good citizens. When there's a dead raccoon, rabbit, possum, etc. in the road in front of our property, one of us goes out there with a garbage bag and the appropriate tool to pick it up.
I have trapped several raccoons and twice had a problem in dispatching them. Laws vary considerably and around here you can trap and kill but not release.
Skunks? Around here roadside carrion runs more towards deer, and that includes suburbia and the city. You'd need a big garbage bag. A few years ago a law was passed that if you kill it you can grill it. The stipulation was you had to take the whole thing; no gut piles along the road. The last deer I hit left the scene before I could get him into the car.
The little stuff doesn't last long. The ravens and magpies are on the job.
Yes, they're part of "etc." I try to con my husband into taking care of those.
We've seen four does in our backyard this year, but they seem to be able to cross our road safely. Most of the dead deer that I see are by the freeway or the five-lane main trunk roads. That makes it the road commission's or MichiganDOT's problem.
I think we have the same thing; additionally I believe you also have to pay for a permit so it's counted in the annual tally.
We had a dead raccoon in our yard that just never got taken. It was in a part of the yard where I rarely go. I could smell it but didn't know where to look until I found it by accident. At that point it was reduced to a pile of hair. If it weren't for the stripy tail, we wouldn't have known what it was.
Were you at least able to make a hat out of it?
There wasn't enough of it left for a Davy Crockett style coonskin cap.
I suppose I could have felted the hairs and made a Homburg or something out of it. A really tiny Homburg.
