When replacing a kitchen sink drain, the cardboard ring is not packaging to be thrown away. It is to prevent the rubber washer from becoming deformed during tightening. I used to toss them in the garbage.

Okay. A while back oven handle came loose and looked easy to tighten by removing back of door. I did this, could not access handle and glass came lose and I could not get it back. Had to pay for repair and even repairman had problem putting it back together. Later I looked it up on you tube and found how easy it was to do. Should have done that first.
Misplacing tools while I was fixing something. I'd leave tools on the top of control panels, on the system structure, wherever. Sometimes I'd be sitting on them. It wasn't due to age. I've done this since I was ten or so. It was the same thing as laying my glasses down somewhere. I do that too.
