health insurance

I receiveed a letter from AETNA health insurance.

Says that due to high blood pressure and colsterol I get 24 one way transportation trips to the doctor and other places.

Just what good do they think a one way trip will do me ? I have to get back home some how. Might as well drive myself ( which is fine as I am in good health) other than where the doctor may put me to sleep for some procedure where I would need some way to get back home.

One way because they hope you die and won't have to pay anyway.

When I read this I guessed that you could use your one way trips one at a time TO AND FROM the doctors office. A quick search turned this up:

Your Aetna Medicare Advantage plan includes non-emergency transportation to your appointments and back home again. Our partner Access2Careā„  will provide up to 24 one-way trips, up to 60 miles per trip. If you need a ride to and from your doctor's office, you'll use 2 of your 24.

So you get 24 one ways, which is 12 two ways.

Yes, insurance company arrogance again.

IIUC, they expect you to walk home. Exercise is good for your heart.

Or just stay there, close to medical attention.

Or maybe get a ride one direction or another.

You can use them as 12 round trips????

Right, but you don't have to if you get a ride one direction or another.

From that I guess that I would use up 2 trips to get to the drugstore and back as it covers picking up prescriptions even though I could just go by the drive through window.

The letter only says "get to doctor" and 'go to other locations' . Never did mention about getting back. I did asume that it would use two trips to get to the doctor and back. Just looks like the leter would have used a slightly different wording.

It's the insurance company's cynical way of sounding generous. 12 round-trips doesn't sound as generous to simpletons as 24 one-way trips. Ask a 3 years old which is more, and I'll bet most will say the 24 trip benefit. Division by 2 is a feat beyond their mental development.

I totally disagree. I agree with Ralph that "trips to the doctor and other places" can be confusing, because it only says "to", but saying 12 round trips would be far worse. It would imply to everyone that if you use them to go there, you've used up the whole round trip even if you meet someone after the appointment and he gives you a ride home. And it's much easier to get a ride TO the doctor if a friend doesn't have to stick around until you're done. In fact maybe you could arrange the appt. for early when your spouse or someone is going to work. He can just drop you off and keep going. But if it said 12 round trips, you'd think if you just used the free ride to take you home, you'd used up an entire round trip instead of just one one-way trip.

Most of us are more than 3. What they could have said which would have been better is "24 one way transportation trips to OR FROM the doctor and other places." But they didn't think of it. They were probably so proud when they switched from "12 trips to the doctor" to "24 one-way trips", they forgot to look further, forgot to change TO to TO OR FROM. Someone should remind them to add "or from".
