Yeah.... to see if the freakin pilot was lit.

Not a view port, a 'glass tube'. As it's been described to me, anyway. The unit is a bit too far away to see from here ( California ).
Still a viewport, like a periscope used where there is no in line direct sight of the pilot and ignition.
