How do I quiet down a noisy furnace?

Jul 28, 2012 2 Replies

My furnace is in a closet in the center of the house. It currently has two metal louvered doors and another 24 x 36 grate of the opposite side for ventilation. The water heater is also in the room. The central air is very quiet but the furnace in the winter is extremely loud. The furnace is only 80% efficient but is only 5 years old. Any ideas?

You need to try cleaning the blades on your blower (the thing that looks like a big hamster wheel). First turn off the breaker and disconnect the fan motor. Take out the screws holding the blower assembly, pull the assembly out of the unit. Use a shop vac and a brush, and clean the wheel. Reassemble. Plug the blower back in. Turn the breaker on. Put the Tstat fan switch to "on" see if it is quiet to test. If not.. Call an A/C contractor. Good luck to you, I hope this helped!
