I just moved into a brand new place and noticed one of the switches in the hallway feels super flimsy, so I pulled it out to take a look. I was surprised to see that the wires aren't even wrapped around the side screws like I've seen in DIY videos. Instead, they’re just poked into these tiny holes in the back. It feels like if I tugged on them even a little bit, the whole thing whould just fall apart. The switch itself feels like the cheapest plastic ever made. What relly concerns me is that there is a bare copper wire just sitting in the back of the box not connected to anything. The green screw on the side of the switch is totally empty. Is this normal for new construction these days or did my electrician just get lazy? I’m worried about a fire hazard since the connection doesn't seem solid at all. shoud I go thru and move everthing to the actual screws or is this push-in method acutally up to code? It just seems like a really poor way to handle wiring in a house that cost this much.

What you're seeing is standard practice for mass-produced new construction homes, even if it feels like a corner was cut. Those push-in connections, often called **backstabbing**, are perfectly legal under the National Electrical Code as long as the wire is 14 AWG solid copper. Most electricians on high-volume residential jobs use them becuase they save a massive amount of time compared to stripping and curling wire around side screws.
The issue is that the spring tension inside those holes can weaken over time, especially if the circuit carries a heavy load. Since you're just running a hallway light—likely with LEDs—the actual current draw is tiny. It probably won't ever cause a fire, but the connection is objectively less secure than a screw terminal. If the switch feels "flimsy," it's a **builder-grade** device. These are UL listed and legal, but they lack the internal build quality of a "pro" or "spec-grade" switch. Interestingly, in places like Germany, push-in connections are the gold standard because they don't vibrate loose, but the version we use on cheap US switches isn't quite that robust.
The bare copper wire sitting in the back is the most concerning part. If you have plastic boxes, that ground wire absolutely needs to be connected to the green screw on the switch. Even with metal boxes, leaving the ground wire disconnected is just lazy work. Modern code genrally expects those switches to be bonded to the equipment grounding conductor. It’s a quick fix to pull that wire forward and hook it up properly. If it were my house, I'd spend a weekend swapping those out for higher-quality switches and using the side screws. You don't have to do it all at once, but starting with the ones that feel loose is a good move. Just make sure you turn off the breaker first. It’s a minor investment in parts that makes the house feel way more solid and gives you peace of mind regarding the connections.
Man, those builder-grade Leviton 1451s are absolute trash. Total "speed-wire" garbage. If you're going to fix it, don't just move the wire to the screw on those cheap things—the internal contacts are still flimsy. Go grab a box of Leviton 5601-2W Decora or some Lutron Diva spec-grade switches. If you want a solid connection without the hassle, check out the Leviton Decora Edge series. They use a lever-actuated clamp that's way more reliable than standard backstabbing but faster than a side-wire loop. That floating ground is a blatant NEC 250.148 violation. The "sparky" on your job was definately cutting corners to hit his daily device count.
Whoa, I'm so stoked to find this thread! I literally just started looking at my own outlets becuase I'm trying to learn the ropes. It’s wild that builders can just leave wires hanging like that! I'm defintely going to check my ground wires now. Quick question though—since I'm already opening things up, has anyone tried those outlets that have the built-in USB ports? Are those just as flimsy as the builder-grade stuff or are they usally built better? I’d love to swap some out while I’m at it!
I had this same mess in my last house and found a backstabbed outlet that was actualy warm to the touch. Scared the crap out of me. Now I only use the commercial-grade switches with those "back-wire" pressure plates. You just slide the wire in and tighten a screw to clamp it down. It’s way faster than looping around screws and feels solid as a rock.
While you're in there, check the ground bundles too. My builder just twisted them once and called it a day. I redid the whole house with Wago connectors and it made everthing fit back in the box so much easier without stressing the wires.
Honestly don't get why they still allow those spring-load stabs. I’ve seen way too many burnt-out outlets becasue of 'em. It’s always the 14-gauge stuff too since you can’t even shove a 12-gauge wire in there if you tried. If you’re gonna fix the ground, just spend the extra couple bucks on a proper spec-grade switch. The click feels way better and you won't have to worry about it failing in five years. Plus, if you ever plan on running anything heavy on a circuit, those backstabs are just asking for trouble.
