Woke up to a massive crack of thunder this morning and realized lightning acutally hit the house. After the smoke cleared, I checked the electrical panel and it’s a total disaster inside. The metal bars where the neutral and ground wires attach are blackened and a bunch of the wire insulation has completley melted off. It looks like a bomb went off in there. I noticed some of the wires were doubled up under the same screws and those spots look even more toasted than the rest. I’ve got everthing turned off right now because the smell of burnt electrical is pretty strong and I don't want to start a fire. I'm realy hoping this is just a panel repair job and not a situation where I have to rip open the walls and redo the whole house. Has anyone had to deal with a direct hit like this? I’m trying to figure out if I shoud just call my insurance or if an electrician can swap out the damaged parts without it being a total nightmare.

Direct hits like that are a nightmare because the damage you see in the panel is usually just the tip of the iceberg. When lightning hits a structure, it’s looking for any path to ground, and it doesn’t care if that path is through your wiring, your plumbing, or your drywall. If the insulation has melted off at the bus bars, it means those conductors reached incredible temperatures instantly. The heat doesn't just stay at the terminal; it travels down the length of the wire.
Those doubled-up wires you mentioned—often called double tapping—are high-resistance points, which is why they look even more charred. But the real danger is hidden inside your walls. The high voltage from a strike can easily exceed the insulation rating of standard Romex or THHN wire, causing pinholes where the electricity arced through the plastic to reach a grounded object like a pipe or a nail. You might have circuits that look fine but are now a massive fire hazard because the insulation is compromised.
You defintely need to get your insurance company involved immediatly. This isn't just a simple panel swap. Any electrician worth their salt is going to insist on a full **insulation resistance test**, often called a megger test, on every single branch circuit in the house. This involves using a specific meter to apply a high voltage to the wires to see if the insulation holds up. If those tests fail, you’re looking at pulling new wire for those runs because the risk of a future house fire is just too high.
Also, keep in mind that every surge protector, GFCI outlet, AFCI breaker, and smart appliance in the house is likely toast. Even if they appear to be working now, the internal components are probably fried or weakened and won't protect you from even a minor surge next week. Don't try to patch this togather yourself. Get a professional out there to document everything for the insurance claim so you can get the system back to code and actually safe to live in.
That megger test sounds intense. Does that mean the electrician has to unhook every single outlet and light switch just to test the lines? I can’t imagine how long that takes.
I'm also wondering if a lightning rod woud've actually saved the panel or if it just gives the strike a better path to fry everythign anyway? I’m just starting to learn about grounding and now I'm paranoid about checking my own panel for those double-tapped wires before somthing happens.
Lightning rods are designed to give the surge a path to ground outside the house, but they aren't a magic shield. You still need high-quality surge protection at the panel to handle the feedback. Since your bus bars are toast, I'd be looking at the service entrance cables too. If that heat traveled back toward the meter, those heavy conductors might be compromised before they even hit your main breaker.
And yeah, the megger test is a slog beacuse you have to isolate the loads, but skip it and you’re living in a tinderbox. I’ve seen wires arc through studs weeks after a strike because the insulation was brittle. Don't cut corners.
Make sure you check your plumbing too if you have copper pipes. I've seen strikes jump from the wiring to a water line and pinhole the copper, wich leads to slow leaks you won't notice til the mold starts.
Since that smell is so strong, be prepared for it to stick around in the insulation and drywall even after the wires are replaced. You might end up needing an ozone machine or some serious profesional cleaning once the sparky is done just to get the house livable again.
