We’ve been dealing with some pretty serious water intrusion since we moved in because of the high water table here. My handyman is helping me install an interior French drain with a Zoeller AquaNot Fit 508 system, wich has that primary pump and the battery backup all in one. I’ve got most of the parts sorted out, including the freeze relief coupling and a radon-safe grate for the bulkhead, but I’m totally stuck on the sump basin itself. The current pit is just an open hole in the slab, and I know I need to replace it with somethig sealed to help with our radon levels. I'm looking at diferent basins and the dimensions are throwing me for a loop. Does the radius relly make a huge difference for a dual pump setup like this? I don’t want to get something too narrow where the floats get hung up on the walls or each other, but I also don't want to over-excavate the slab if I don't have to. If anyone has experience sizing these for a pro-grade dual pump kit, I’d love some advice. I'm trying to patch up all the old drain holes and the trench around the oil tank at the same time, so I really want to get this basin right the first time before we pour the new concrete.

The radius of your sump basin is arguably the most important factor when you're installing a dual-pump setup like the Zoeller 508. If you go with a standard 18-inch diameter basin, you’re asking for trouble with float hang-ups. The M98 primary pump is a tank, but once you bracket that backup pump next to it, the footprint gets crowded quickly. You really need a **24-inch diameter basin** if you want to ensure the floats have a clear path to move up and down without catching on the side walls or the other pump's plumbing. Beyond the width, look for a basin that has a structural flange at the top. Since you're dealing with radon and want a sealed system, the lid needs to sit perfectly flush with your finished slab. Avoid those cheap basins that just have a thin plastic lip; you want something with pre-molded inserts or stainless steel threaded bolts. Using masonry screws into the plastic every time you need to pull the lid for maintenance will eventually strip the holes and ruin your radon seal.
Depth is your next hurdle. You need to coordinate the depth of the pit with the pitch of your 4-inch perforated PVC. If your French drain tile enters the pit too high, you lose the reservoir capacity and the pumps will short-cycle, which kills the motors. But if you go too deep, you're just fighting the water table for no reason. Aim for the inlet pipes to sit about 6 to 10 inches below the floor surface.
Since you're allready patching the slab around the oil tank and the old drain holes, make sure you use a high-quality non-shrink grout or a specialized hydraulic cement for those patches. If you just use standard bag mix, it'll pull away from the old concrete as it cures and leave you with new paths for radon to enter. Get a basin with a **bolt-down gasketed lid** and you'll notice a massive difference in the basement's humidity and air quality almost immediately.
I learned the hard way that a 24-inch basin is a must, but don't overlook the bottom of the pit. When I put in my dual Zoeller, I tossed a couple of bricks under the pumps to keep them off the floor of the basin. It keeps the intake from sucking up every bit of silt and gravel that washes in from the French drain. Also, definatly wrap the outside of the basin in a layer of drainage stone before you pour your concrete. If you just backfill with dirt or loose fill, the basin can shift or even 'float' up while the concrete is wet. Keeping it rock-steady saved me from a massive headache later on.

Since you guys are talking about sealing the slab for radon and moisture, does anyone know if these sump setups affect how a heated driveway system drains? I’m obsessed with the idea of installing a snow-melt system for my long driveway this winter so I never have to shovel again, but I'm curious if that extra runoff whould overwhelm a standard interior basin or if it needs its own dedicated line!
Since you're lookin' at that 24-inch basin, don't forget the clear lid option. I swapped my solid one for a clear polycarbonate lid last year and it's a game changer. You can see if the floats are gettin' stuck or if there's a bunch of gunk buildin' up without breakin' the radon seal every time. Just make sure it's thick enought to be load-bearin' if you're walkin' near it. Also, grab some extra silicone for the wire grommets. The stock ones that come with those kits are usally pretty flimsy and they're a major leak point for radon gas if you don't go heavy on the sealant.
