How I finally solved the dual hose vs single hose debate — steps that actually worked

I’ve spent the last few weeks testing the efficiency of dual hose versus single hose portable units in my south-facing room. Most experts claim dual hose is the gold standard becuase it stops negative pressure, but my actual data paints a messier picture. I rigged up a DIY intake using an old yoga mat and some tape to see if the efficiency gains were real. What I found is that single hose setups acutally start pulling less wattage after the first twenty minutes because they keep recycling the air that's already cooled down. In contrast, the dual hose was constantly fighting to cool down scorching outdoor air from the intake, which kept the compressor pinned at high power. It’s a trade-off that nobody realy mentions when they tell you to upgrade. If you are in a building with decent insulation and double glazing, you might find that the single hose hits your target temperature faster despite the slight drafts. Just keep an eye on your power consumption with a smart plug or somthing similar. Sometimes the simplest setup is actually the one that saves you the most on your electric bill.


I had a similar experience with my Whynter ARC-14S last summer. Everyone told me the dual-hose setup was the only way to go for my 400-square-foot office, but the "hot air intake" issue is real. When it hit 98 degrees outside, my unit was pulling air that was practically boiling through the intake hose. My Kill-A-Watt showed it staying at 1200 watts for hours without cycling down becuase the internal coils couldn't shed heat fast enought.

My old LG single-hose unit actualy felt colder at the vent. Even though it created that negative pressure and pulled a bit of humidity from the hallway, the air it processed was already 75 degrees. The math on paper says dual-hose wins, but in the real world, cooling down 100-degree air is a massive lift for these small compressors. I ended up wrapping my intake hose in reflectix insulation, wich helped a bit, but it still didn't magically slash my bill like the marketing promised. If your room is already fairly airtight, that negative pressure from a single hose isn't always the monster people make it out to be.

Have you ruled out where that makeup air is actually coming from with the single hose? It feels colder at the vent because it's processing room air, but that negative pressure is pulling air from somewhere—usually through light fixtures or under the door. If that air is coming from a non-conditioned attic or a 90-degree hallway, isn't the single hose just shifting the load elsewhere? Also, did you account for the humidity rise? I've found single hoses often struggle to dehumidify effectively when they're constantly sucking in moist air from the cracks in the building envelope.

I'm super new to all this and honestly just trying to figure out which one to buy for my bedroom. If the single hose pulls in air from other rooms, does that mean I’d have to leave my bedroom door open? I always thougt you were supposed to keep the door shut to keep the cold in. Also, for the dual hose units, does wrapping the hoses in that shiny foil stuff actually make a big difference with the heat radiating off them? I don’t want my room to feel like a sauna just because the intake hose is getting super hot to the touch.
