I've been doing this for a while now and I've broken my fair share of gear, but this one really caught me off guard. I was using one of those standard Husky multi-use painter's tools to scrape some dried joint compound off a baseboard. Nothing heavy duty at all. Suddenly, the metal blade just snapped clean off right where it meets the grip. I’ve always thought these things were basicly bulletproof, especially for how little they cost. I've broken plenty of expensive gear over the years, but I've never actually managed to snap one of these cheap things before. Usually, you lose them in a bucket of water or leave them on a site long before they actually fail on you. Has anyone else noticed the newer ones failing like this lately? I'm starting to think maybe the manufacturing has changed or the steel is just getting thinner. I don't want to keep wasting money on tools that can't handle a basic scraping job if they're all going to be this brittle.

The reality is that Husky and several other big-box house brands have moved toward a thinner, more brittle stainless steel to keep those price points down. You're likely seeing a failure at a stress point where they've narrowed the tang to save on material cost. It’s a common issue now because those tools are stamped out in massive quantities with less regard for the heat treatment of the metal.
If you don't want to keep throwing money away, you should honestly just stop buying the Husky ones. The only reason to own them is the **lifetime warranty**. You can take that broken piece back to Home Depot and they’ll swap it for a new one on the spot, no questions asked. But if you're on a job site, a free replacement doesn't help much when your tool is in two pieces and you're miles from the store. Switch over to **Hyde** or even the higher-end Warner tools. Hyde still makes professional-grade 5-in-1s and 14-in-1s that use high-carbon steel. You can feel the difference in the weight immediately. The blade usually extends much further into the handle, which prevents that exact snapping issue you ran into. They cost maybe five dollars more, but they’ll actually survive being used as a pry bar or a heavy-duty scraper. And honestly, check the thickness of the blade before you buy your next one. A lot of the newer multi-tools are trying to be too many things at once, which compromises the structural integrity of the main scraper edge. Stick to a dedicated professional scraper from the paint department rather than the impulse-buy bins near the registers. The steel quality in those bins is bottom-tier and almost always prone to snapping under any real pressure.
I stopped buying my scrapers and 5-in-1s at the big box stores a couple years ago. Every time I hit a stubborn bit of caulk or dried mud, I felt like the blade was going to fold. I started hitting up estate sales and flea markets instead. I picked up an old, beat-up Red Devil with a wooden handle for a buck last summer, and that thing is a tank. It’s got a full tang and the steel doesn't flex like a wet noodle. If you see one with a wood handle and some rust at a garage sale, grab it. A little sanding and it'll outlive any of that modern junk.

I hear what everyone's saying about the steel quality, but have you ruled out if that tool spent any time in the cold? I've seen plenty of 'pro' gear snap like glass after sitting in a frozen van overnight. Also, are you sure there wasn't any side-loading while you were scraping? Even a tiny bit of lateral torque can pop those blades if they hit a high spot in the compound. I'm just wondering if it was a one-off fluke before we assume every new tool on the shelf is garbage.
I had that exact same snap happen with a store brand scraper when I was trying to pry a piece of trim. Since then, I only buy the Purdy Contractor Multi-Tool. It has a full-length high-carbon steel blade that runs all the way thru the handle, so you aren't going to snap it at the neck like those Husky ones.
It’s got a bit more weight to it, which helps when you're realy digging into old mud or stubborn glue. Seriously, just spend the extra money on a Purdy and you won't be dealing with those brittle snap-offs anymore. Best investment I've made for my tool belt in years.
