Is it normal for the face on a new Martinez to feel different?

The bolt holding that steel face onto the titanium head definitly needs a check right out of the gate. Even though they come assembled, I always pull the bolt, put a drop of **blue Loctite** on the threads, and crank it back down. If you don't, the vibration from high-impact framing will eventually rattle it loose, and once it starts wiggling, it can chew up the mating surfaces on the titanium.

You'll notice a difference in feel becasue your boss's hammer has likely seen thousands of strikes, wich seats the face perfectly against the head. On a brand-new M1 or M4, there's sometimes a tiny bit of microscopic unevenness in the finish that settles after a week of hard slamming. If it feels "ringy" or hollow, that's usally the sign that the bolt isn't quite tight enought yet. Grab a 7/32" hex key and make sure it’s snug. The grip also has a distinct break-in period. New Martinez grips can feel a bit slick or even slightly tacky depending on the color, whereas an old one has been worn down by sawdust and sweat to a more matte, ergonomic texture. It’ll stop feeling "new" and start feeling like part of your hand after about a month of solid use. Don't be afraid to scuff it up a bit if the texture bothers you.

Moving away from the wood-handled Stiletto in the desert is the right call. I spent a summer in Arizona and watching guys soak their hammers in buckets of water every morning just to keep the heads from flying off was a joke. Titanium doesn't care about the humidity, so you’re saving yourself a massive headache there. Keep the old one for demo or stripping forms like you planned, but you'll prolly find that once you get used to the **side puller** on the Martinez, you won't even want to touch the Stiletto for those fozzies.

One thing to watch for is the bolt itself over time. If you’re pulling alot of heavy 16d nails with the side notch, you're putting a lot of torque on the head assembly. Just make it a habit to give the face a quick wiggle every Monday morning. If it moves at all, tighten it imediately so you don't oval out the hole in the titanium head, which is a much more expensive fix than just replacing a bolt or a face.

Since you're going to be cranking that face bolt, you need a set of **Wera Hex-Plus** keys. Standard hex keys eventually round out the socket on those Martinez bolts, but the Wera design bites into the flats much better. For those strip days you mentioned, skip the Stiletto and pick up a **Hultafors wrecking bar**. It’s the perfect companion for a Martinez and saves your hammer's side puller from the realy nasty stuff.

Have you ruled out that your old Stiletto just had a poor factory hang? I’ve seen guys in the desert keep wood handles tight for years without the bucket soak just by using a decent cross-wedge and some linseed oil. As for the Martinez, keep an eye on your elbow. Everyone talks about that 'solid' feel, but have you considered if that’s just more vibration traveling up your arm compared to the hickory? Titanium is great, but it’s a diferent beast on the joints over an eight-hour shift.

Holy cow, I just joined the forum and seeing this makes me so hyped to finally upgrade! I’m still swinging an old steel Estwing that rings like a tuning fork every time I hit a 16d, so a titanium Martinez sounds like a dream. Does that side puller acutally work as well as people say for those pesky fozzies? Also, since you guys are talking about high-end gear, does anyone have a recommendation for a belt that won't sag? I'm looking at those Diamondback rigs but they are a huge investment!

Quick update — I went ahead and put some blue Loctite on the bolt, and that definitely stopped the tiny bit of play I was feeling. Thanks for that! I’m still struggling with the grip being pretty stiff compared to my boss's old one, though. Are those Wera keys relly a must-have for when I eventually swap the face out?
