Plugtop electronic Transformer

I have an Ikea 12v halogen table lamp. It has a plug top power supply which has died.

I thought it would be easy to locate a plugtop electronic transformer to replace it, but I'm having problems.

Anyone know a source at a reasonable price?

TIA

I've bought replacement transformers from RS in the past. You might end up having to solder on a new connector though.

BodgeIt explained on 16/08/2010 :

You will need to know the current or wattage it needs, but take a look at Maplin and CPC. If there is a dimmer control included in the PSU, you will be struggling. It may not be an economic repair anyway, versus a complete new light.

What current does it need to supply? (failing that, the wattage of the bulb?)

Is the existing one AC or DC?

I have just had a bright idea...

How about one of those cheap (SMPSU) power supplies used for individually supplying those 12v 50w ceiling lights?

Hi John

The lamp has a 20watt MR16 bulb fitted. The fried psu is only marked secondary 11.6V 20-60W. I'm assuming it would also include a soft start feature.

Thanks

All of these I've seen are just plain ol' AC output transformers.

That would be fine - although you would need to box it up safely.

Then you need a 12v transformer, 20w or 1.66A or more. AC or Dc is fine.

Bit surprising that no one has come up with the path I take almost automatically when I'm looking for this sort of thing - try Ebay !!

I've had just the same problem - twice over in fact in that I bought two halogen lights like yours some 12 months ago and then blew up the transformers because I didn't realise that one of the bulbs had developed a filament turns short that took out the primary of its tranny - and I then tried the second tranny in its place - doh !!

Look at Ebay #280540411385 - these work well; they get gently warm at

20W. I haven't tried checking to see what happens if they get overloaded, but it would be nice to think there's some protection. At =A34.30 all in, it's a no-brainer.

Thanks Rob, just bought one, as you say for £4.30 it's worth a punt

In article , robgraham writes

The bulb wont care but the switch on the lamp might, it will probably have a higher rating for ac than dc due to self extinguishing arcing on ac. If it was a 50W lamp I would expect the switch life to be reduced on dc but for the 20W that the o/p has now advised, I would be less worried.
