Heating always on (potterton ep3000)

Hello all,

I am having a problem with my heating at the moment. I moved into my house last year & do not have the instructions for th heating system. As it is nice & warm at the moment I have turned the Central Heatin off & am only using the Potterton EP3000 to sort out the hot water. Th problem is that the heating comes on at the same time. If I turn the ho water control off the heating goes off. As I have no instructions I hav no idea why it is doing this? Is the central heating linked to the hot water?

Any help would be great,

Matt Riddle

Haven't you been watching BBC Watchdog, there were loads of complaints about the circuit boards inside those boilers. The only way your hot water would go off if you turned the heating off is if you still had a tank somewhere. If you only wanted hot water the boiler would heat the water in the tank after closing a valve to stop it going around the radiators. I think it might start getting complicated and there are a few layouts for systems with a tank in the bathroom or cupboard. Look around to see if the radiator pipes lead back to a valve somewhere as flicking the switch for heating should really open it and hot water should close it off.

If the heating/hot water has been ok in the past then your problem is unlikely to be the programmer. Check to see if you have a two port or a three port valve. Most likely valve stuck in heating open position.

I assume that you have a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard (or somewhere) which is heated by the boiler?

Somewhere in the system (probably also in the airing cupboard) you should be able to find one or more motorised valves similar to this

(2-port) or to this

(3-port).

The problem almost certainly lies in one of these. Tell us how many you've got, and what sort, and we'll have a better idea of how your system is

*supposed* to work.
