is the difference.

I know an RCBO is a smaller RCD, bt what is a minitrip as opposed to an MCB?

Thanks. Tool station do not say that. That sounds a cheap way of updating an old consumer unit.

rail mounting for modern CUs

in type for old rewireable fuse carrier replacement.

Mostly as above - although note the plug in ones have a lower maximum breaking capacity than the rail mounting ones. (they are however similar to the breaking capacity of most rewireable fuses)

An RCBO is a combined RCD and MCB - not necessarily smaller (i.e. size is not relevant).

Not overly useful though. You dont get better safety from them, and you do get icnreased nuisance tripping..

Indeed, this is often the case.

There are a few cases where they may be worth having; the obvious ones being if the occupants would be unable to rewire a fuse if it blew, or if the occupants would be likely to abuse a re-wireable fuse.

They can also sometimes be useful when doing something that might impose further current de-rating to the cables (say extending a circuit, or adding insulation to a house). Since re-wireable BS3036 fuses imposes a

0.7 de-rating factor one must apply to the circuit cables, replacing it with a MCB also removes this limitation.
