Anyone good at washing machines?

My four year old cheap and cheerful ( Servis 1200 rpm spin) seems to be leaking somewhere (?)

It washes and spins fine. There is no water on the floor or anywhere visible. The problem arises overnight after it has been used, the drum starts to fill with water and the next time I come to use it I have to run the spin/empty cycle to clear the water before I can wash.

Any ideas what is causing this? Anyone had the problem? I cant find any visible indication it is letting in water via the inlet. I can see a problem in the hose/ draining system.

Is it worth fixing?

It could be worth looking in the draining filter (I think that's what it is - you normally access it through a small removeable panel at the bottom of the front of the machine) to check that something as innocent as a small coin is not blocking it. They symptoms you explain have happened to me twice and each time it was down to a coin blocking the system and took a couple of minutes to fix. Good luck!

Mitch,

Almost certainly you have an inlet valve 'letting by' - probably due to a bit of crud sitting on the seating. Most (but not all) washing machines have the inlet valves as an integral unit with the water inlet connector, so look where the water hoses fix on the back, and the lump just inside should be the inlet valve. There will probably be two (or a double unit) one hot one cold with rubber hoses running to the soap box and drum. You can test if it's letting by by (MAINS UNPLUGGED) by taking off the rubber internal hose, turning on the water and seeing if it drips (but turn on slowly ) There are many generic inlet valves available that will fit.

One of your water valves isn't shutting properly. Take the top off the machine and you will find them immediately on the point where the water pipes go into the machine. It is probably the cold one.

The valve is a small box in the water pipe, two wires and the water pipe in and out.

Unplug the machine from the power supply before you fiddle of course!

That will most likely be a problem with the water inlet solenoid valve. These are usually a part of the same unit where the water pipe is connected on the back of the machine. There will also be a pair of wires going to it to operate the valve.

Turn the power off, take the cover off, remove the pipes and take out the valve. It might just be crud on the valve seating which is preventing it sealing properly.

I don't know the answer to this, but Haynes do a sort of generic washing machine manual I think which may be useful.

I have certainly found it useful (with the usual Haynes reservations).

Anyone used the 'baby' one? The bit on the exhaust system is gruesome...!

The other posted replies have probably hit the nail on the head, but before taking things apart I would check that the drain hose has an up-and-down in it.

I found my washing machine filling up with (sometimes smelly) water each morning and eventually realised that the kitchen sink was partly draining into the washing machine! The outlet hose was connected to the sink drain horizontally (below the sink, but before the trap).

It must have started causing a problem because either the sink trap was getting blocked, or there was a natural kink in the outlet hose which was moved when I was firkling for things in the cupboard
