Woodworking at Home Magazine

Is anyone familiar with this site and there DVD magazine? I stumbled across the site and it seems pretty interesting yet a tad expensive on an annual price tag. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Well, let's see...

-A two hour long DVD, showing construction, in detail.

-Full project plans to:

-Good looking projects I'd actually want to build for my home.

-DVD format allowing me to print unlimited copies of plans for each time I trash them in my shop. ;)

All for under 5 bucks a pop. You think that's pricey? Seems to me like the best deal to come along since the invention of moveable type.

Michael

  • Unless, of course, the guys doing the presentations are as mind-numbingly boring as the guys doing that routah show. Watching two hours of the same routing operation done over and over and over again would be about a deal breaker for me. :)

I bought the first coupleissues to "try them out" and was hooked. I then subscribed and am glad I did. I'm more a beginning turner and find the Dick Sing turning projects to be excellent. Nice to see the stuff actually being constructed instead of just reading about it. I also sent a question about a project and received an email within a day from both the magazine and the author. All in all, I find it diffucult to wait for the next issue. Rick Albuquerque, NM

Looks interesting. At first I snickered since the DVD player is not easily take into the "library" to read in the morning. But considering the information it may well be worth the price. I'm at least going to get a single issue to try. Ed

Considering a magazine off the newstand cost $5.00+ This is a good deal. Hey, maybe Netflix will pick them up.

BTW, If you don't have a DVD player I saw an ad for a DVD player onsale at Radio Shack for $29 Bucks.

RKON responds:

You know, we've got a DVD player. Last VCR that went belly-up got replaced with a dual unit. But somehow I didn't see myself watching the stuff on TV...kind of silly, considernig I usually read my woodworking magazines in front of the idjit box, letting that big gray eye stare blankly at me.

Still, it does seem a point, as someone else mentioned, that being able to print plans extra times after spilling glue or finish or coffee on them is handy, so a player for this machine might be an idea, too.

I emailed them about a preview copy to see before I think about ordering. As some of you mentioned who wants a bunch of commercials to watch or other non useful information. I think it looks pretty cool myself and it seems so do the rest of you. I was just hoping to find someone who already is a subscriber to get some "inside" information on what is actually on the DVD. And is there anyone on the planet who still does not own a DVD player? Heck there cheaper than vcr's now. In fact I have been shopping the set top recorders to find the most compatible model for the different players in my home. Again I am looking for current subscriber feedback other than that on there website. Kevin

Saw the TV ad this morning. That price is after a $10 rebate. Wal Mart has a $29 model and a $199 32" TV at Circuit City. If you think about the price, it is incredible. For comparison, that is a huge color TV for less than a day's pay. When I got married 37 years ago, a b & w 19" portable was close to 7 or 8 day's pay. Ed

If you play the WWHome CD on your PC are you able to print anything from it? It would be a pain in the a double s if you had to hand copy what you wanted.

Thanks for the feedback Mark. The kind of info I think most people would find useful in determining a products worth before "diving in"!

Joe asks:

Uh, can you print pages from those old "Bonanza" shows?

charliediy whoopsed:

Ooops. Apologies. Thought it read TV. Someone else had commented earlier that it was handy to be able to print out a version and replace pages that might get gooped up, one way or another.

First of all, I am not affiliated with this company, i have not received any kickbacks or anything else that led me to post the following. Where's my attorney when I need him... :-)

OK, the comments in this thread convinced me to order a back issue. Went out to the site and there is a disclaimer about havening problems with the online ordering system but I try anyway. It gags and hangs before the order is complete, well I was warned.

Ok, no 800 number, lets try email. Send an email off to "Chris" asking about 800 number to order. BAM! less than an hour later here is the response.

----------------------- From: Chris DeHut [ snipped-for-privacy@woodworkingathome.com] Hi Bruce,

It appears that our web server is suffering from severe problems and as such, we are in the process of switching web hosting companies. This may cause problems with access to our website during the next few days. In the meantime, as another option, you can call us between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm toll free at 877-543-1316.

We apologize for the problems with our web site and we are hoping that the new web hosting company will serve us and our valued customers with much greater reliability.

I sure wish we could access the Rec.woodworking news group here so we could see what people are saying but our firewall (or whatever) won't let us access news groups. In the meantime, feel free to call me.

I have since sent him the link to Google and he has seen the postings. Here is a slice of one of the replies for those that think the price is too high. Now I don't think the per issues price is high at all, I may feel different after seeing the content but the synopsis looks great.

----------------------------------- However, we are producing a television show and a printable magazine at the same time so our development costs are much higher than a print magazine. Furthermore, our manufacturing costs are about 3 times higher (a stamped DVD such as ours costs 3.4 times more than a printed magazine). Then there is the mailing costs - printed magazines are recognized by the post office as a "Periodical" and they get periodical pricing. As our magazine is not "Printed matter", the post office won't give us the much better periodical mailing prices.

-----------------------------------

ok, so the customer service is good now to go and purchase the product.

DVD players are dirt cheap now, you can regularly find them for $30-50 almost anywhere. They might not be full-featured units, but they will play CDs and DVDs and isn't that what really matters?

Got a sample issue a couple days ago. Very nice and informative. The way they go through the projects is easy to follow. And the fact its on a DVD and has chapters inside each project makes it easy to go back and forth browsing around or if you missed anything. Also includes PDF files including script for those who want to print it out. Thumbs Up on this one! Kevin
