Sorta OT: having surgery Monday

For several months now, I've had some difficulty moving my right thumb. (Yes, I'm right-handed.) In the last two weeks, it's gotten much, much worse. My family doctor's January diagnosis of synovitis was, at best, incomplete, and according to the hand specialist I saw last week, I have a pinched nerve in the carpal tunnel, which has resulted in significant atrophy of one of the major muscles in my thumb. [OBWW: it so far hasn't impeded me much in the shop, except that I have a hard time picking up small objects, and it's nearly impossible to use a screwdriver or any type of thumbwheel adjuster. But day-to-day life is another story: I can't open my hand wide enough to pick up a glass of water, and it's very difficult to write, among other things.]

I'm having surgery Monday morning to correct the condition which is pinching the nerve.

Please join me in praying for a successful surgery, and the speedy recovery of the full use of my hand.

Thank you, and God bless you all.

Doug:

Former significant other had this done on both hands - sequentially. She had a bad experience with the anesthesia in the second procedure but the surgery went well and her recovery was quite good. The surgery gave her back most of the use of her hands and reduced to a minimum the "discomfort" (doctors and dentists refuse to use the P-word - PAIN!) she'd been having.

Will try and work with my fingers crossed for you. May you heal quickly and catch up on all your reading in during your recovery.

BTW - constant use of the TV remote is not advised :)

Best wishes

I am afraid I am looking at the same thing in the not too distant future on my right hand.

Don't despair. My father-in-law (age 73) had that surgery on both hands recently and he's a new man. Only regrets not getting it done sooner. Good luck to you.

good luck Doug; I'm hoping your surgery is as successful as my hand surgery a year and a half ago. I had a trigger finger which hurt like hell. keep us posted.

the first doctor i went to wanted to use a general. I changed doctors (the first guy turned out to be a prima donna according to those in the profession) and had my surgery done with a local. that's much better for the patient, when at all possible. NEVER choose a general unless it's a major operation that demands a general. I've had 3 majors and after one of them I got sick due to the anesthesia.

Good luck Doug and it is best you get this done ASAP. A friend of mine ignored his symptoms as long as he could. Then one day he slammed his fingers in a car door and noticed that it did not hurt. Fortunately no broken bones but the doctors insisted on performing the procedure the next day.

I'm not much on praying Doug, but I do wish you a speedy and full recovery. FWIW, several of my neighbors have had similar surgery in the last year or so, and every one of the surgeries was a success. So I think your odds are pretty good.

Good luck!
