???? how would that work on e-bay? Guy had reasonably good ratings up until then. One of the comments indicates that the police found his apartment empty.

I will bet you someone stole his password and used his account to steal money. I get the emails all the time saying I need to sign or lose my ebay account.
Obviously not. Did you see his before 12/5? He had approximately 500 positives and 2 negatives. That's 99.6% positive.
Probably because he was either a fraud who built up his rating, ripped people off, and skipped the country or his account was stolen. Both happen frequently.
I won't pay over $100 for anything on ebay unless I can pick it up in person for cash or the seller is a reputable company with a presence outside of ebay AND they take credit cards.
IMNSHO, anything less than 99% is a gamble, depending on the number and nature of the negs.
But look at the feedback prior to the beginning of November -- it was overwhelmingly positive, it was only after December when the scam unfolded. Looks like he was planning this for some time, got a good setup, got good recommendations, then one final binge of selling nonexistant goods and

Take a look at the feedback and the various blogs started on this guy. The police went to check out the complaint -- apartment was empty. Looks like this was a long-term scam, or a last-minute "travelling" money idea on the part of the seller.

Oh, I dunno. My opinion of feedback has dropped drastically. I thought I was buying a useful pamphlet, only to discover that what arrived was tripe, first covered in the '50s, but supposedly related to getting great gas mileage from today's cars. I didn't really expect it to be much, but I keep looking for article subjects, so...
Anyway, it's a cobbled up fuel preheater for carburetors. The pamphlet was copyrighted in '81, and the material wasn't accurate then.
So based on its being a semi-nonsense item, I gave the guy a neutral feedback.
He came back with a threat to "give me a feedback you really wouldn't like if you don't remove the *negative* feedback" which I assume he'll do today or tomorrow.
It does make one wonder what kind of thugs do sell there on a consistent basis. Obviously, this is not a normal thing, or IME, it isn't. I've had numerous good transactions with no problems at all.
Using the feedback area as a tool of retaliation strikes me as somewhat different from what is intended by Ebay, but also something nearly impossible to check and enforce. It might have a really negative effect on some people who do sell there, and who do depend on Ebay for a part of their living.

I had someone threaten me that way. I reported him to Ebay and got a polite response that they didn't feel the offense was serious enough to warrant kicking him off, but they had warned him. And I never saw the threatened feedback.
I remember coming accross one seller who gave negative feedback to every customer who gave him negative feedback, and in the feedback comments area stated quite plainly that his gripe with the customer was the negative feedback he had received, which was typically for misrepresenting the condition of the merchandise.
I will not provide feedback for a merchant until they have provided me with feedback (unless it is absolutely terrible merchandise). They have my money and have shipped the item LONG before I receive the item. They already know what kind of feedback to give prior to my receiving the item. I don't get feedback, I don't leave it, hence my feedback rating is REAL low, considering I've been purchasing stuff on eBay for several years.
Exactly! Who's the usually the first to blink (say thank you) in a face to face transaction in a store? Should be the seller.
A lot of the sellers use automated software that basically handles almost the entire process including leaving feedback AFTER they receive it. I always include a note with my PayPal payment indicating that I leave feedback ONLY after it's been left for me. If the seller doesn't leave it for me, they do without. I've been fortunate in that all my eBay deals (200+)have gone well but, like Odinn, if I got stung I'd be more than happy to leave appropriate feedback first
