Lowes vs. HD....

Soil was basically clay that had the top soil stripped during construction of the development.

Lots of mulch along with some fertilizer helped things along.

No deer to keep things trimmed back then.

Someone has some brains. If I just need a single something plumbin-wize I'll go to HD, Canadian Tire, or Home Hardware. If I need anything specialized or any amount, it's over to Marks Supply.

There's actually a whole branch of math that deals in optimal strategies for managing checkout lines and the like. Google "Queuing Theory".

Not at ALL impressed with Delta, myself. I like Price Pfister - have had very good results with their products over the years. The old Waltec stuff was good too.

Locally, Kitchener Waterloo Ontario, at least six

privacy issues. Spent 1/2 hr on the phone -- 30 solid minutes of mostly waiting on hold -- with HD, 4 different people, 2 hangups, 3 diff. stories. Ultimately, no arbor vitaes. Called Lowes: No arbor vitaes, either. But, it only took me 20 seconds to glean this info. Boom, bang, done. Goodgawd.... Unfortly, no Lowes conventient to me, gotta pay a toll to NJ, always a traumatic event for me. If you google Westchester County, NY, you'll see 500 HDs, and not ONE Lowes.... I don't know what (or who) is behind that, but I'm sure there is some corruption at work. HD is sumpn else.... I think s*it service is their own personal artform, and I think managers are rewarded for it, bec undoubtedly s*it service corresponds highly with cost savings for them. I'm sure seeing 3 out of 15 cashiers open, with long lines on each, just warms Management's heart. -- EA

unreasonable. Lowes and HD both offer the same specific value; a huge fricking building full of deep inventory for all items they stock at reasonable prices. They are not offering good customer service. They hire people who can't get real jobs or are too old to want to work hard. Visit the store and buy what you find on the shelf or don't. That is clearly what they offer. Works for me several times a week on average.

They do have some problems though. One time I needed a y-fitting for the garden hose. According to the HD web site they were sold out, but according to the Lowes site they had plenty in stock. So I went by Lowes and nobody could find one of the blasted things. So I went out to the parking lot, ordered online for same day pickup, waited ten minutes for the email that they had it ready, walked in, and the same person who couldn't find it handed it to me.

I kind of like leyland cypress for that sort of thing but admittedly, they take up a bit more space.

Many don't sell to the general public.

Wish that were the case by my HD and Lowes. Neither has enough people. When you can't find something, you can't get an answer either.

Pretty much depends on where you life. Lots of lumberyards, hardware stores and plumbing supply houses.

They wont sell to the public? Bring in a business card. Even from someone you know and tell em thats you and open a cash account.

They really dont give a s*it beyond following corporate rules. Sales are sales, expessially when its in cold hard green money.

Thats one of the reasons they offer lower prices than the other stores..and why they try to get folks to do the self checkout. Keeps their personal expenses down.

Some people just don't understand the concept of a WAREHOUSE STORE. Sad, isn't it?

Around here, Lowe's offers a 10% Veteran's discount.

There were lumberyards around here that required a copy of your business license, and tax certificate before you could set up an account. One now has very few customers, and a lot of 'OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!!' But after 25+ years of telling people to go away, they are in no hurry to deal with them.

I haven't even seen a real lumber yard or what I'd call a real hardware store in years. I never frequented plumbing supply houses - they didn't like walk-in business so I always avoided them.

I don't know any plumbers. Sorry. Not going to happen. If they don't want my business I'm not going to force them to do business.

Actually, many do. Some would rather not piss off their customers than make what few bucks I'd bring them. I found plumbing houses especially didn't want my business (electrical were much more willing to take my dead presidents).

I prefer to pull my own lumber, rather than let them load up a lot of rejects.

The biggest jerks that I ever ran into were at a HVAC wholesaler. They refused to sell me some duct board about 25 years ago. I asked the manager his full name so he could be mentioned on the air at the TV station, and told him that I didn't want to blame the wrong guy for refusing to sell to a Christian TV station. His eyes went wide, and he yelled at one of his workers to pull what I wanted, then gave me 'D' column pricing. They even loaded it into my truck without being asked. :)

We weren't doing any HVAC work, we needed to block the sides of the water chillers on the transmitter to bring the coolant to normal operating temperature, before we flushed the transmitter and refilled it with distilled water & antifreeze.
