Exterior OAK treatment - Advice please

Hello,

What advice do you give me for this triple layer oak jamb- 4cm thickness, 4 years old, given with semi-waxed varnish (water based)? It withstood well over 3 winters, completely exposed to hard weather conditions. Would it be better clean the oak and to treat it with some special oil for exterior and hard weather conditions, just to penetrate it an no more?

Thanks a lot,

A lot depends on what type of oak you are treating. But for me, a good exterior oil, after removing the existing finish, would be the way to go.

Any clear varnish is going to have have to be maintained every few years. If you want more trouble free I would use an exterior paint. Even a Spar/Marine varnish will need to be reapplied every few years.
