Another Job Progress

So I presented a drawing of the job I am working on and now I have made some progress.

Both bottom cabinets. They both will have 2 large drawers.

The face frames, front and back for both top cabinets.

The bottom section will hold a smaller drawer and the larger upper section will have adjustable shelving for each upper cabinet.

And again, where this is headed.

Lookin' good Leon. What is the finish going to be ? Are the upper & lower are separable ? for moving ? In the past, I've moved a few "wall units" that are not as big as your project and stairways are a challenge .. ... lots of cussin' & bruised walls & ceilings. John T.

Thank you!

The cabinets finish, described to me by Nailshooter, "Mushroom", paint. He is going to spray paint the finish.

The top ledge of the bottom cabinet and the top ledge of the top cabinet will be maple with a clear finish.

For transport and to be painted, and carried into the house it will be 7 main pieces. 4 cabinets, a base, and the 2 ledge pieces.

He plans to attach the pairs of top and bottom cabinets together permanently. The top cabinets and all of the maple ledges will be removable.

He said he will move it into position and let the hairy legged younger guys do the future moving as the bottom cabinets become 1 as well as the top cabinets become 1.

for moving ?

Absolutely. This will actually be used as a pantry and will likely always be used on the first floor near the kitchen.

My wife's sewing studio is up stairs and my son and his friend and I moved an almost 84"x40"x24" cabinet up there 10 years ago... Impossible with out using the 4 arm fork lift straps. One of us on the top side and two if us on bottom. Once actually on the stairs it was relatively easy. But we had clearance issues to actually get it in line to go up the stairs.

Thank you

The customer, Nailshooter, will paint it "mushroom" color. Your guess is as good as mine. ;~)

Yes, what we've come to expect from Leon.

I hope he's getting a good price. He's doing half the work. ;-)

I'm going to have to find some of them. My jointer is supposed to be here in a couple of weeks and I'd be hard-pressed to move five pounds with my right arm, much less 500.

That sure makes things simpler.

Psychedelic 'shrooms?

No Pressure! ;~)

Absolutely, about half my normal price. And it shure speeds my part. I normally begin refinishing panels before glue up. And with 2~3 coats of finish, that could add a couple of days for each unit.

It does. And the location that it is going is wide open.

So what I'm hearing is that you made it harder for Nailshooter than you normally do for yourself. ;-)

(Should have invited him over to finish it before glue-up and, of course, for a beverage or three)

Ok, More!

I figured out a way to complete a groove into a dado many years ago. This is particularly helpful when building cabinet face frames what have groves and dado's to receive the sides, tops, and bottom, panels.

Normally this is pretty easy to do on the back of a FRONT face frame, you don't have to be very careful as that will likely never show. Because I also use back face frames that detail has to look perfect, or close to it.

I actually contacted Routerman, about 11 years ago to see if he has a jig or suggestion to accomplish hits. He did not. Remember Routerman?

Anyway I will share the jig that I came up with. I have literally cut hundreds of dados in face frames with this jig.

The problem. The joint is reinforced with a Domino but to make the pieces quickly I batch cut the groves and then assemble. But the stopped grove needs to extend into the other grove.

The jig uses a piece of material the same width of the grove with 1/2" Baltic birch plywood rails attached to both sides. These rails guide the guide the top bearing 1/2" diameter router bit to form the dado to intersect the grove.

The result.

And now the upper 2 cabinets are assembled.
