Just noticed that there is a very short A road near to me, probably the remnant of a much longer A road which has been chopped by additions and renumberings. Starts at a roundabout with a newer cut through to the next major road, ends when it joins another A road.
Anyway, it is 1.3 miles long.
I can find references to shortest road or street, but not specifically to A roads.
Just a trivial musing on road classifications.

So the change from A road to B road didn't denote a change in "ownership" from DofT to count council, because if it was an ordinary A road it would have been council-owned and remained so when it became a B road.
I've seen A roads (maybe even trunk ones) that get downgraded to B roads when a newer bypass is constructed and takes on the number that the old route had. I can't think of an example right now. The only road that I know round here that was renumbered was the A1: when the new motorway standard A1(M) was built alongside, the existing road, now converted to single-lane single-carriageway for use by learners, tractors and for access to side roads between motorway junctions, became A6055 or A168. For some reason, there is a gap of one motorway junction where there is no parallel road alongside so non-motorway traffic (eg diverting to avoid an accident on the A1(M)) has to take a tortuous diversion through a village and a stupid dog-leg diversion onto a bridge over the motorway https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.1621783,-1.4535966,15z
My wife researched that route in case of closures on her normal motorway route to/from work - eg due to a lorry fire which closed either one or both carriageways one day.
