Very timely. My daughter's just bought an old place and wants to open up a fireplace. Ta.
Yes - completely fascinating.
It is interesting to note that the acceptable separation between flue and combustibles seems to be a half brick - though it does say there should be a 2" gap between roof woodwork and the chimney wall.
Whereas English building regs say a full brick (200mm).
