Tower crane safety

Don't they park those tower cranes facing into the prevailing wind.

No, I'm pretty sure that they disengage the drive and allow them to act like giant weathercocks, to allow for changes in wind direction.

Leaving H&S measures to one side, I assume a company (and not some oligarch) must own that crane. Abandoning a valuable asset seems like a strange thing to do.

It does seem odd. There are also about a dozen portakabins stacked up on the site.

These things stay on the original site until there's another use for them. It saves the owner having to have their own storage space.

In a land where people will thieve anything, I would wonder what "deals" had been done with the local gang lords to keep things in place.

Well yes, but I suspect the list price for one of those girt big cranes is a bit more than a few scaffolding poles.

A quick google suggests that tower crane hire is around £2,500 per week

- and I suspect that's the cheap end of the range.

Maybe the firm doing the work went bust when the Oligarch stopped paying?

It says Keltbray on the side of the crane, and they are alive and kicking.

Maybe the builder that owns the crane got sanctioned too
