Tiling straight onto sand and cement rendering

Jul 27, 2006 2 Replies

Is there any reason why I should not tile directly onto a brick wall with sand and cement rendering - omitting a layer of plaster.

None at all, though I'd probably want to use tile cement.

Assuming there are no issues with damp etc..

I've done this and it was fine. I was using big tiles and I felt this made it easier to accommodate the variations in render thickness (because I rendered it), whereas on a nice flat plaster wall this is not such an issue. Used a ready mixed Unibond waterproof tiole cement as I remember.
