I am a new user of Thunderbird, so please humour me.
On the NG display on the left of the screen, each box shows new messages to download. But there is no way of doing this. None of the download commands work. And to add insult to injury at the bottom of the screen headed by the symbol ((.)) is a message that reads "There are no new messages on the server".
And finally if I attempt to read the calendar how do I get back to reading the newsreader.

there is an alt.comp.software.thunderbird group
the numbers in circles on the left aren't new counts, but unread counts, the message saying no new messages, just means there are no additional messages since the previous ones you haven't read yet.
slight difference in meaning
you should have various mail/news, calendar, tasks, addr bars towards the top of the screen (if you have opened them) clicking there will switch, alternatively alt+1 to alt+4 will switch.
I see you have asked again over there, there are people happy to help, but so far I don't think you've expressed your problem very clearly, also no sign you're actually seeing the responses?
Press F5 to download any new messages and/or upload any replies that you have made.
Click on "Today Pane" at the bottom right of the screen to hide or unhide events and tasks (is this what you mean by calendar ?)
The number in brackets after the NG name is the number of unread posts. When there are new posts, the name and this count is highlighted in blue (with my TB version). As soon as you start looking at posts the NG name and count turn bold white. when there are no posts or they have been time-purged the NG name becomes non-bold.
I am sorry to be the cause of confusion. I am running Thunderbird News for the Mac, and also Usenapp, a news reader for the Mac to try and gain a comparison between them. And in so doing I lost some replies using T'Bird which were down loaded OK into Usenapp. But it did lead to confusion on my part over T'Bird.
Because of my lack of experience with T'Bird I am making lots of errors with the program. I think I will most likely stick with Usenapp, as the learning curve with T'Bird seems quite extreme to me.

By default Thunderbird will read groups in "threaded" mode - collecting all posts together into a single block with a hierarchy reflecting who is responding to who. If you are more used to a email application style with separate sent and inbox folders, this can be a bit disconnecting.
It ought to be difficult to actually lose a reply on usenet - it is all still there on the server, and if push comes to shove, you could refresh everything from there.
TB does allow local copies of messages to be deleted or archived though
- and that can be done with keyboard shortcuts.
I guess it depends on what you are used to - I tend to find that TB relatively easy to get to grips with for usenet, so long as you don't want to set up elaborate message filters.
