An "Active" Extension as you describe fits within the 5m limit - it's 5m per segment (a hun will also act as a repeater). You can daisy chain up to 6 of them.
I've tried usomg passive extensions - they become flaky at a total length of less than 6m (it's a timing issue).

I always put a name on the original art work so it's obvious if you've forgotten to flip at any stage in the process.
