Blink reflex is local to the eye itself. But you should be wearing eye protection anyway if you value your sight.

So there's some kind of miniature local brain that can process the retina's image?! I would have thought that required quite a lot of processing power to interpret an image and work out if something is coming towards you.

I do with something wild and dangerous, like using an angle grinder. But I was just wiping silicone off a tool. A bit pinged towards my eye and my eyelid caught it.
