That Little O Ring on M10 ended Tails

How important is it? I have managed to nadge about 4 now everytime I screw and unscrew the tails into the tap body they seem to shred. Can I just PTFE tape the ends instead?

Sounds like there's some burr on one of the parts. I sometimes use a smear of silicone grease on O-rings which slide on mating surfaces.
