Temperature data logging (Central heating and stuff)

Evening all, Hope most of you are keeping well. ;)



It's been a while since I was here last after my replacement of an old Combi. with a new Thermal store, wood burner/boiler and small Intergas heat-only boiler in 2022. All is working perfectly and last month used just £10/week in gas for C/H and DHW (4 bedroom 70's detatched.) and the wood burner/boiler going every night on free wood.



Now I'm trying to find an "easy" way of logging at least 8 temperature chanels to get an idea of times and temp's of the following:



Gas Boiler Flow/Return Central heating Flow/Return Wood burner Flow/Return Top of thermal store temp. Lower thermal store temp.



I have an old Raspberry Pi 2 Model B V1.1 (was my sons but never been used) 4 x usb ports and ethernet if that's got any potential but I'm pretty useless when it comes to Linux other than: apt update, apt upgrade.



Failing the Pi option I don't think an 8 channel stand-alone datalogger is economically viable so will have to resort to poking thermometers through the respective pipe insulation and just stand around watching.

I bought 10 IoT temperature & humidity sensors for £25 on aliexpress and hooked them into my Google Home setup which I then connected to a setup of Home Assistant in a docker container on my server.

All the graphs you could ever want, and you can d/l data for your own spreadsheets or whatever.

Been running for 3 weeks now, and already there are some interesting findings. One room mysteriously seems to stay warmer than the house as a whole. No idea why.

I think it really comes down to form factor.

'Room' temperature sensors (for mounting on your wall) that use zigbee/bluetooth/wifi are ten a penny.

'Probe' sensors (with a ~5mm metal bar you can shove in places) are a bit rarer, but do exist.

'Bead' sensors (with a tiny thermistor or thermocouple bead you can eg tape to a pipe) are a bit harder.

which have a probe but it appears to have a headphone jack on it. I'd guess the probe is going to be a thermistor - my money would be on 10K 3950 as that's a very common thermistor and they come in probe form factor:

in which case replacing the probe with a 10K 3950 bead thermistor would probably do it. Then you can get good contact with a pipe (don't forget to insulate around the outside).

I think these are typically set up for the Tuya app out of the box, which will likely provide some logging. You can then set them up to talk to a larger system like Apple/Google/Home Assistant if you want.

Have you swapped the sensors around to check for sensor offsets? I get the impression the cheap sensors aren't super accurate.

Accuracy is really in the eye of the beholder. I can live with a +/- 0.5C margin of error at c. £2 a pop :)
