Supplier's customer service.

We have an elderly Sebo vacuuum cleaner that began behaving intermttently.

Being a psychic genius I decided it must be the motor brushes (without checking you understand). I ordered against the advertised model number and was delighted when replacements arrived very quickly.

When I dismantled the machine I discovered that although the carbon elements were pretty much the same, the housing was totally different. The installed ones were mounted in a metal sleeve and retained by raising a metal lip after insertion in the motor housing.

The received brushes were mounted in a thick plastic outer that had to be screwed into place. A YouTube video shows them clearly.

I had extracted one of the installed brushes and photographed it adjacent to one of the new ones and sent picture to the supplier assuming that they had sent the wrong item.

They promptly replied asking for the part number on the packet.

I photographed that too and sent them the image.

Their reply was that they had taken advice and that the replacement should fit. I wrote back inviting them to review my first picture and pointed out that is inappropriate to try to fit a square peg in a round hole.

They then offered me a refund provided the package was undamaged, that I supply a copy of their invoice and returned it "signed for".

I will not be doing business with Spares2Go again.

They are probably in breach of provisions of the Sale of Goods Act but I am too lazy to check and challenge them because ultimately the cost / benefit would not be in my favour.

I had a similar experience with UKWhitegoods - the dishwasher basket wheels I ordered had my dishwasher model number on the web page, but they don't fit. Apparently there are all kinds of different sub-models and since Magnet went bust they don't have a record of what fits (but of course don't say this on the webpage).

I haven't insisted on a refund yet as I'm wondering whether I can find something to make them fit (they need some extra length on the spindle - need to find an appropriate dishwasher-proof spacer). The actual cost of them was about the same as generic ones from ebay so if I sent them back I wouldn't save very much.

Last year I had a problem with an order from them - an appliance dolly, missing its wheels. I informed them of the omission, and they immediately sent out the missing bits.

I will be ordering from them again.

The last couple of times I have needed brushes I took the old ones out, checked the measurements, and got replacements from eBay without faffing around with manufacturers or other generic "spares" sites.

Half the problem is that makers tend to use different parts from time to time and half the time nobody even bothers to notice until a situation like yours arises of course, Sloppy makers of the device I'd suggest. Brian
