We bought the cheapest microwave we could find, & 42 years later it goes "Phutt".
Disgusting I calls it.

Before you get so angry with it that you want to throw it into the bath, why don't you -erme- throw it into the bath?
If the Magic Smoke has leaked out, well, all bets are off but if it has expired in some other fashion then it might be worth poking it around a bit - except you definitely DON'T want to poke it around with anything metal until you are absolutely certain that the capacitors have been discharged.
My second-hand-in-1986 microwave oven has once needed the main internal fuse replacing but all the other failures - even the ones which might have appeared at first to be electrical have come down to a buildup of dirt and/or grease and seriously aggressive cleaning got it working again as normal. For seriously aggressive, read, taken to pieces and scrubbed out with washing-up liquid and piping hot water then rinsed with pure water and allowed to dry in a warm place for at least a week.

I didn't even get 5 years out of my last fridge-freezer.
Took about 2 hours haggling in Currys as well.

The smell of quondam electrolytic capacitor is one I know & can recognise. When looking for a replacement, I read (somewhere) that pretty much all domestic microwave ovens stem from the one manufacturer - regardless of the brand name shown on the unit. Dunno if this is true, but it would not surprise me.
They gave you the cold shoulder?
I was given a hairdryer for my 21st birthday and 35 years later it stopped working.
I'm still using hair brushes that I was given as a Christening Present (in
1940).
Do you still have hair to dry?
Tim
Shame on you for posting what I was thinking.
And the ear hair trimmer as a retirement present?

A decidedly frosty reception to the suggestion of discount.

I've not had so much luck.
My current microwave is only a couple of years old and the paint on the inside rear wall has flaked off, and is rusty underneath. Like wot used to happen with car paint.
Still works but a bit naff.
(a) Clean any splatted food immediately. (b) Leave the door open to dry any condensation.
Put it this way. It is far quicker than it used to be.
If looking for a recommendation
(c) Buy one with a stainless steel interior
But do you still have any hair :-)
When Michael Palin was traveling in the Himalayas, there was a roadside barber who also removed ear hair with a burning jos-stick (or similar).
Turkish barbers around here do it by dipping a long cotton buddy into alcohol, lighting it and flicking the flame into one's ear. Effective but IMHO, after careful consideration, beyond my ability to do to myself.
diud that, still rusting in corners. Welds not stainless?
