I don't know, on the rare occasions I use email on my Android phone, I use K- 9 Mail, which seemed to be the most trustworthy-looking IMAP client in their walled garden. They certainly don't have Claws, and I doubt that Thunderbird would run on the average phone. I don't recognise any of the newsreaders as being familiar Open-Source applications and haven't tried any of them, maybe someone else here has.
I think the issue here is not Usenet services, but a decent newsreader on Android. I said in another post that I've never tried any on offer in the Play Store, but maybe somebody has.
I use Claws-Mail for email and Usenet, and Thunderbird can also do this, just a bit more slowly. For a dedicated newsreader, I'd probably use Pan.
You don't have to pay. AIOE is free gratis and for nothing provided that you don't try to inject spam or post more than ~50 msgs a day.
The OP did say that he couldn't justify the cost.
No mention of android in the OP.
XPN is much better which is a fork of Pan
Please explain why.
Well better in as much as it has a simpler easy to use interface then Agent/Pan/Thunderbird
