Don't be bloody stupid. They'd leak.

A four foot one for the price of a five foot?

You miss the point.

If the price was £100 and now £80 and the price for something comparable next door is £80, then it isn't 20% off of anything that has any meaning other than an inflated first price; or perhaps some overstocking or supplier volume commitments.

Whichever it is, the orange, sticky bun and sixpence in David's Christmas stocking are a lot more genuine than this.

Yes this is how buisness works. They can offer 20% off something without actually reducing it's original price by a penny - it only needs to have been sold in one store at the inflated price for at least 3 months prior to the 'sale'

Genuine or not, they do it all the time, watch ad break in the ITN news at teatime and see all the lounge suite sales, which 'must end Friday!', not to worry though because they start again on Saturday

:-)

Reminds me of one of the Giles cartoons with the General Store offering "Merry Tractors" at Christmas.

I recently was looking for a rad. Wickes had a regular one for 38 although not on the shelf, a compact one with the grilles and end-panels for 50-something. This was with THEIR 20$% offer. B&Q had plenty of compact ones on the shelf mostly undamaged for 37. Now, 20% off that makes it around 30 quid for a rad so not bad at all.

Windmills?

Useful for garden ornaments?

I'd never have guessed....

I don't watch ITN News so can fortunately miss out on that opportunity.

With free gnome (or kde if you prefer)

They don't even need to do that if they have a disclaimer notice, such as "this item was sold at the higher price on 23 and 24 December 2003".

No - 20% off the price, not the length :-)

Could be the height though...?

If it's from B&Q, certainly.

We are coming up to one week of hell with a B&Q boiler at the office (Raven Boilers - who on Earth *are* they?). In the space of a week, the thermostat went, which caused it to overheat, which blew the safety overheat stat, which overheated more, which knackered the pump, which overheated more, which knackered the flue fan. When the engineer took the panel off, the thermocouple cable snapped. Then the thing blew the main circuit breaker.

All in one week.

We are huggled around a single electric fan for now...

B-&-bloody-Q - just don't!

Did the repair man paint over the gas tap at all?

Sorry - cut 20% off a radiator, and it'll leak is what I meant...

I dunno. I got some quite nice 40cm fans at 2.50 each in a 90% off sale. Stainless steel, and they don't half blow at 'max'. Just the job for putting in a bit of plasterboard in a window, while angle-grinding the surrounding brickwork to enlarge it... They spin down faster than they once did.

Reminds me of stories of the sign at a filling station, "Free petrol tomorrow".

A pub near me has a "Guinness Free Tomorrow" sign.
